Their first Whifler home, and one of his earliest designs.
In the mid-1950’s the Brown Mc Makins commissioned young William Whifler, working as an apprentice under architect Oscar Thayer, to design them a home. Located at 620 Pullman, Hillsborough, CA, this home was featured in the California Book of Homes 1955 issue which can be seen below. The Brown Mc Makins so loved their home, about ten years later they commissioned William Whifler to design a second, one that was larger, grander, and a bold statement of pure art. This first older home has survived essentially intact, benefiting from the owners’ intent to preserve the structure’s artistic integrity.
